The latest Air Quality Monitoring Annual Report, published by the Irish
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), shows that air quality was again
generally good throughout the country in 2001.
Despite this position, the report shows that there may be difficulties in the
future in complying with the stringent new EU standards for nitrogen dioxide
and PM10 particulate matter in some urban areas. Levels of smoke and sulphur
dioxide remain very low in all areas. Monitoring for these substances
continues to be scaled down as a result.
