In its 2014 annual report, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work
(EU-OSHA) outlines its highlights of the year, promoting occupational safety
and health (OSH) to improve working conditions across Europe. The OiRA online
tool for risk assessment helps small businesses comply with OSH requirements
and the OSHwiki platform provides the OSH community with a new way of
The EU Strategic Framework emphasises a particular focus on small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and has recognised the major contribution
EU-OSHA's Online interactive Risk Assessment (OiRA) project will make in this
area. OiRA is an online platform that helps employers' and employees'
organisations as well as national authorities produce free, sector-specific
risk assessment tools, targeting micro and small businesses specifically. By
the end of 2014, 47 tools had been published, with another 30 tools under
development and more than 27 000 assessments have been recorded. Examples
include OiRA tools for commercial shops in Greece, for the construction sector
in Bulgaria and for agriculture in Latvia. To help reach as many SMEs as
possible, EU-OSHA's OiRA promotion strategy 2014-20 was published in 2014.
The initial work for the project Improving occupational safety and health in
micro and small enterprises in Europe' was completed in 2014. The aim is to
identify the key conditions that create an environment in which OSH management
can be significantly improved.
