Furniture warehousing to home delivery - manual handling solutions

A report, Furniture Distribution Guidance: Warehouse to Delivery, has been
prepared by the British Health and Safety Laboratory which has considered the
risk factors involved in the furniture industry, both in the warehouse and
delivery environments. It considers the types of handling aids and devices that
are currently on the market that may reduce the risk in this and similar work
environments.

Trends in furniture design are seeing an increase in product size and weight,
eg beds and mattresses, this rendering products more awkward to carry, placing
handlers at increased risk of musculoskeletal injury.

Recommendations are made in the areas of:

  • communication and planning;
  • information and risk assessments;
  • education about handling aids; and
  • general matters.
