Loud music hurts the ear - and can even cause hearing loss. The conference
"Music - Safe and Sound", held on 16th and 17th January 2007 in the Federal
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in Dortmund, addressed
various issues concerning noise exposure in the entertainment sector.
Pubs, Clubs, concert-halls, theatres - these are hazardous places for
music-fans as well as musicians and workers with long-term noise exposure.
Experts from industry and science showed the risks and consequences of hearing
loss - physically and socially.
But they also showed strategies how to control noise, from personal hearing
protection to modern construction and design concepts for Clubs, theatres or
orchestra pits. Other issues were, for example, the medical problems of
monitoring hearing loss adequately, medical care for musicians, regulations
concerning sound pressure levels, the hazards of rock and pop concerts, and
Last but not least the practical considerations were discussed. As can be
easily understood, there is a conflict between medical aspects and reality on
stage. Also the compliance of affected persons may be inadequate.
