New Safety E-Course Addresses Basics of Personal Protective Equipment

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has published a
new course on the basics of Personal Protective Equipment (ppe).

The course covers the basics of hard hats, safety glasses, earplugs and other
PPE, and includes practical tips for how to use PPE safely. Participants will
learn about foot, head, eye, face, hearing, hand and respiratory protection, as
well as high-visibility clothing. The course teaches them which PPE applies to
which hazards, how to select and fit PPE, and how to use, care for, inspect and
maintain PPE. Participants will also gain an understanding of the legal
requirements regarding PPE, and the limitations of PPE as a hazard control
method.

Topics include:

  • Common PPE

  • Hazard control

  • PPE program

  • Responsibilities of workers, supervisors and employers

  • Basic information and safety tips for the most common types of PPE:
            
    • Head protection ­ e.g. hard hats
              
    • Foot protection ­ e.g. safety shoes
              
    • Eye/face protection ­ e.g. safety glasses
              
    • Hearing protection - e.g. ear plugs, muffs
              
    • Hand protection - e.g. gloves
              
    • Respiratory protection
              
    • High-visibility clothing

Upon completion of this course you will know :

  • The appropriate PPE for many workplace hazards
  • The basics of selection, fit, care, and use
  • The importance of regular inspection and maintenance of PPE
  • The limitations to PPE as a hazard control method
  • That there are legal requirements regarding PPE

Average time to complete this course is approximately 60 minutes.
