Over the last few decades ergonomic product design for the workplace has evolved to include new concepts and solutions to help improve the comfort, health and general wellbeing of those who work and play with technology. Colebrook Bosson Saunders (celebrating their twenty-first birthday in 2011) are leaders in this field and continue to be pioneers in the design and manufacture of workplace products. Colebrook Bosson Saunders’ range of products include flat screen monitor arms (‘Wishbone’, ‘Zorro’ and ‘Giselle’), laptop stands (‘Jellyfish’), CPU holders (‘Jaw’ and ‘Loop’), mobile computer workstations (such as ‘Albert’ and ‘Tube Station’), and cable management systems (such as ‘Slinky’). HME Import Agency offers a wide range of high quality office furniture for both home and working environments and aim to improve people’s lives in terms of comfort, aesthetics and sustainability.

Ergonomic workplace design has been influenced by an increased recognition that work systems and tools should be developed and employed so that the job fits the person and not the other way around. Ideally workplace furniture should enable the body to move through a range of seating positions. The human body is not designed to be stationary for long periods at a time. It is important to move and to change working position frequently. Increased movement and flexibility can be facilitated with the use of monitor arms which enable greater fluidity between user, desk, chair and computer.

Monitor desk arms were designed and developed [first by Colebrook Bosson Saunders] to meet these needs. The principles employed are that by using a screen or monitor arm a display can be easily adjusted to the correct height for each user. Furthermore, easy side-to-side adjustment is possible to avoid screen glare. Colebrook Bosson Saunders aspire to stay ahead of the field by designing for emerging technologies and the way we work today and tomorrow. The company’s latest products (such as the multi-award winning flat screen arm ‘Flo’) focus on touch-screen technology such as the iPad and provide innovative products to help future-proof the workplace.

Jeremy Myerson, leading thinker and author on workplace design writes in his article ‘designing offices to improve innovation’: “The chief causes of staff sickness are infection, stress and poor ergonomics . . . Check the angles and comfort levels of your computer workstations. Back pain and repetitive strain injury are a major cause of days lost through staff sickness.”

The philosophy of both companies is that good ergonomic design prevents technology from dominating the workplace and puts people first to create a healthier and more efficient working environment.
