Preventing Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Sonography

A diagnostic medical sonographer is a highly-skilled professional who uses
ultrasound and other specialised equipment to create images of structures
inside the human body that are used by physicians to make a medical diagnosis.

In a new publication the US-American Institute of Occuaptional Safety and
Health (NIOSH) highlights the risks for sonographers developing work-related
musculoskeletal disorders and provides recommendations that include appropriate
engineering controls, work practices, hazard communication, and training to
prevent these work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

The following are factors that, in combination and over time, lead to
musculoskeletal injuries:

  • Static and awkward postures and movement resulting from the use of the
    transducer and positioning of both patients and equipment

  • Persistent and continual pressure for sustained periods of time during exams

  • Poor workplace ergonomics in the design of equipment, chairs, tables, and
    lighting

  • Increased exam scheduling

  • Sonographer height, age, and gender
