Proposals to tighten the asbestos directive

EU Coucil and EU Parliament published a Common Position on the amendment of the
current asbestos directive (83/477/EEC) to update the current directive on the
protection of workers against risks related to asbestos exposure together with
a number of amendments.

The Commission is proposing to reduce exposure limit values and establish a
single level (as against two in the original directive). It alters the scope of
the existing directive, simplifies the provisions in the event of limited
exposure, introduces a new measuring method and also deals with training for
workers.
