Protecting the interests of all workers, regardless of age, is particularly
important in the context of the European Pillar of Social Rights , which aims
to deliver rights such as equal opportunities and fair working conditions; for
example, one of its 20 principles is Workers have the right to a working
environment adapted to their professional needs and which enables them to
prolong their participation in the labour market.'
The project "Safer and healthier work at any age - occupational safety and
health (OSH) in the context of an ageing workforce, was initiated and financed
by the European Parliament and was carried out by EU-OSHA by delegation from
the European Commission.
The aim of the European Parliament was to investigate ways of improving health
and safety at work considering the challenges of an ageing workforce and to
assist policy development in this area. The project carried out by the agency
provides a comprehensive overview of issues related to ageing, work, and OSH
and an analysis of policies and initiatives addressing the ageing of the
workforce across Europe. The project also took account of Eurofound research
on sustainable work.
An interactive visual presentation of key-results of the project is available,
including data on demographics, employment, working conditions, and health, as
well as examples of OSH and related policies across Europe addressing the
challenges of an ageing workforce.
