There is a higher proportion of older people in Europe now than at any time in
recent history and it is likely to increase. At present one in every six people
is over the age of 65, but by 2033 that is expected to rise to almost one in
four. We are also seeing changes in the number of older people in the
workplace.
There are no special health and safety laws that aplly only to older workers,
but the employer has a general duty to protect the health, safety, and welfare
of the workforce - all workers including the elderly. There is also the
requirement to do a suitable risk assesment focussing on the age of workers.
This guidance will help workplace representatives accommodate for an aging
workforce.
