Research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) has focused on producing noise treatments to reduce noise generated by
the Roof Bolting Machine.
Field studies support the premise that, on average, drilling is the loudest
noise source to which a roof bolting machine operator is typically exposed.
Thus, the objective of the study has been to reduce operator exposure to that
noise. A drill steel enclosure has been developed as an engineering control.
