Great honour for the Euskirchen-based company Peter Greven Physioderm (PGP): The globally active supplier in the field of occupational skin protection and hand disinfection has now received the "Blue Angel" award for its liquid cleanser Ecosan for particularly environmentally and health-friendly articles. Although the criteria for the renowned eco-label have been tightened, PGP did not have to adapt its liquid cleaner because it already met the high standards. This means that Ecosan remains the only rinse-off cosmetic product to date to have been awarded the seal.
"With this renewed award, we want to honour good quality and sustainable production methods and make them visible," said Rüdiger Wollmann, Chairman of the Management Board of RAL gGmbH, at the presentation of the label at the company's headquarters in Euskirchen. The "Blue Angel" is the oldest environmental label in the world and also the best known in Germany. It was created in 1978 on the initiative of the Federal Government. The label's good reputation and credibility are enhanced by the fact that it is awarded by an independent commission made up of representatives from industry, environmental and consumer associations, trade unions, churches and the scientific community. The impact of the products on people, the climate, resources, water, soil and air is examined. In the category of rinse-off cosmetic products, five criteria in particular are checked: the use of renewable raw materials, the biodegradability of ingredients, the limitation of toxicity to aquatic organisms, the avoidance of substances that are harmful to health and the environment, and the packaging.
"Sustainability is firmly anchored in our company," explained Dr. Bert Nolte, who is responsible for technical management and quality management at PGP. "We want to take a pioneering role in this field. The renewed award for a bestseller from our product range is a nice recognition in this regard, but above all an incentive to continue our efforts."
The "Blue Angel" eco-label is normally found mainly on products from the consumer sector. The liquid cleanser Ecosan, which is also allowed to carry the EU Ecolabel, is still the first and so far the only product in the category "rinse-off cosmetic product", such as shampoo, soap or shower gel, to be awarded the label. "We are convinced that in occupational skin protection, too, the future belongs to sustainably produced products that are gentle on the skin. We would like to continue on this path," said Frank Severiens, commercial manager at PGP.
Henning Scholtz, Head of Environmental Labeling at RAL, emphasized that the selection criteria for the Blue Angel award are high and have been tightened again in 2020. "They should not be achieved by everyone, otherwise it would not be an award." PGP is part of the Peter Greven Group. The family-owned company, which was founded in 1923, has its headquarters in Bad Münstereifel and is one of the largest employers in the region. Worldwide, around 450 employees of the Peter Greven Group work for customers from more than 85 countries.
