PIANO: Quieter when it’s loud! König + Neurath presents new acoustic furniture at the A+A 2007

More and more companies are opting for the economically sensible solution of rationalising their office areas – frequently, however, to the detriment of room acoustics. This results in reduced employee efficiency that threatens to negate the desired economic benefits. At the Safety, Security and Health at Work specialist trade fair (A+A) in Düsseldorf, König + Neurath will be presenting concepts to improve room acoustics – such as PIANO, an innovative, sound-absorbing storage furniture solution.

Many offices look good but suffer from poor acoustics, particularly when sound-hard surfaces such as glass walls, storage wall, linoleum or parquet flooring are used. These transform sounds into noise, which then becomes a burden. A study conducted by the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety concluded that elevated noise levels result in an increase in error frequency at computer workstations of up to 113% and that the processing time required for computer-based procedures also significantly rises in response to raised noise levels.1) Improvement can be achieved through the use of special, sound absorbing furniture. The PIANO storage furniture solution by König + Neurath features specially developed absorption surfaces and makes an audibly perceptible contribution towards improving the working environment.2) “The secret lies in the fact that the front and rear sides are made from perforated punched steel that are laminated from the inside with textile materials,” explains Peter Feldmann, Project Manager for Ergonomics at König+Neurath.

“In conjunction with the special dimensions, they function like a broad spectrum absorber and audibly minimise the noise environment in offices.” PIANO also enables the often undesired aspect of speech awareness to be addressed. PIANO optimises the sound quality of architectonic problem zones. Its effect can be felt even in a small office where just one employee frequently uses the telephone. Furthermore, the harmonised models open up diverse room usage possibilities – and what’s more, the strict cubic design and the punched steel fronts are also an attractive eye-catcher in any office.

The effectiveness of PIANO can also be experienced at first hand at the A+A trade fair thanks to a multimedia presentation focusing on acoustic planning and office space design. “We would like this video and audio performance to spark a dialogue with the visitors,” explains Feldmann. “When used appropriately, acoustic absorbing furniture such as PIANO can positively influence the room quality and space requirements. In this respect, PIANO makes an important contribution towards the enhancement of office real estate.”
