Safety conversations with workers can help prevent workplace injuries

A simple but effective, safety conversation is one of the most
powerful instruments to manage risk. Unfortunately, many supervisors are not good
at conversation. Most organisations don´t invest the time and resources into
training supervisors to be effective conversationalists. It is assumed that an
effective conversation and skilled questioning come naturally. In workplaces
with a techincal focus, engineers ans technicians are usally quite poor at
effective conversations. It´s not their bread and butter; "soft" skills are
generally not a big part of their technical training. The most important skills
to having an effective safety conversation are: pitching, framing, questioning
and priming. Without understanding, coaching and practicing these skills, you
will have little chance of properly hearing and influencing culture and
behavior at work.

However, every day, safety conversations take place at all levels of a company,
from executives and managers to front-line supervisors and workers. These
conversations have great potential for improving workplace safety an health.
