The Future of Occupational Safety and Health in the EU

EU Directors General of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) met on 19th
October 2005 and discussed five themes they believed to be key for the new
Community OSH Strategy. The starting point for their discussion was a UK
Presidency paper setting out some initial thoughts on these five themes. This
paper had been developed in the light of discussion with Member States (MSs),
Social Partners and the European Commission (EC) in the run up to the October
meeting. It also reflected the outcome from the Evaluation Seminar in July and
discussions in the Government Interest Group of the Advisory Committee on
Safety and Health at Work.

  • The five discussed themes are:

  • (1)  Mainstreaming occupational health and safety

  • (2)  Better Regulation

  • (3)  Targeting interventions for maximum results

  • (4)  Setting targets to deliver outcomes

  • (5)  Building an evidence base
  • Reviewing the discussions the importance of working with and through others was
stressed to achieve our objectives. More thought shall be given to
communication and to simplifying our messages.
