General Requirements of Protective Clothing

The general performance requirements for protective clothing are set out in EN ISO 13688: 2013.  This standard replaces the withdrawn standard EN 340: 2003, though EN 340 is still called up in many Specifications.

Both EN ISO 13688 and EN 340 specify general performance requirements for ergonomics, innocuousness, size designation, ageing, compatibility and marking of protective clothing and the information to be supplied by the manufacturer with the protective clothing.

  • BTTG™ are able to offer a full range of tests to cover the requirements of EN ISO 13688 and EN 340, including:
  • ISO 3071 determination of pH,
  • ISO 3175-1 for dry and wet cleaning procedures and
  • EN 14362-1 for determination of the presence of Azo dyes.
  • Additionally this standard looks at ISO 7000 labelling, ISO 3635 size designation and Chromium and Nickel content.
  • Through our Certification Body we are also able to assess garments according to either of these standards.

Protective clothing against chemicals

Chemical protective clothing comes in a range of ‘types’ which relate to the end use of the product, these are:

  • EN 943-1: Protective clothing against liquid and gaseous chemicals, aerosols and solid particles. Performance requirements for ventilated and non-ventilated "gas-tight" (Type 1) and "non-gas-tight" (Type 2) chemical protective suits
  • EN 943-2: Protective clothing against liquid and gaseous chemicals, aerosols and solid particles. Performance requirements for “gas-tight” (Type 1) chemical protective suits for emergency teams (ET)
  • EN 14605 - Protective clothing against liquid chemicals. Performance requirements for clothing with liquid-tight (Type 3) or spray-tight (Type 4) connections, including items providing protection to parts of the body only (Types PB [3] and PB [4])
  • EN 13982 – 1: Protective clothing for use against solid particulates. Performance requirements for chemical protective clothing providing protection to the full body against airborne solid particulates (type 5 clothing)
  • EN 13034 -Protective clothing against liquid chemicals. Performance requirements for chemical protective clothing offering limited protective performance against liquid chemicals (Type 6 and Type PB [6] equipment) 
The ‘type’ tests are designed to ensure wearer protection against everything from radiation, and gas, right through to chemicals and powders.

All standards are linked to EN 14325, “Protective clothing against chemicals. Test methods and performance classification of chemical protective clothing materials, seams, joins and assemblages”, which describes how the physical tests should be performed, ensuring that garments made from such materials do not unduly break, stretch, abrade or suffer damage from creasing/flexing.

Standards called up in EN 14325 for fabric testing include; Abrasion (EN 530), Flex Cracking (ISO 7854 Method B) at room temperature and at low temperature conditions, Tear strength (ISO 9073-4), Tensile (EN ISO 13934-1), Burst (ISO 13938-1), Puncture (EN 863) and chemical penetration (EN ISO 6530).

For whole garments and assemblages, each ’Type’ standard has its own requirement depending on the end use, e.g. inward leakage for chemical protective, spray testing for paint booths and cleaning zones as well as seam strength tests (EN ISO 13935-2) to ensure the whole item functions correctly and adequately during end use. 

At BTTG™ T&C Ltd we are able to offer a service to provide testing of both the fabric, seams and garments.  We can additionally test for infectious agent resistance and microbial properties, as called up in EN 14126, with the aid of our sister company Shirley®.

Industrial Workwear

Protective clothing is extensively worn to protect the wearer against a range of hazards including flame, radiant heat, convective heat, contact heat, molten metal, weld spatter and accidental contact with live electrical conductors.

Typically industrial coveralls or jacket/trouser systems are tested, however, many of the requirements apply to hoods, aprons, sleeves and gaitors. The main applicable performance standards are:

  1. EN ISO 11611 – Protective clothing for use in welding and allied processes.
  2. EN ISO 11612 – Protective clothing – Clothing to protect against heat and flame.
  3. EN ISO 14116 – Protective clothing – Protection against heat and flame – Limited flame spread materials, material assemblies and clothing.
  4. NFPA 2112 – Standard on flame-resistant garments for protection of industrial personnel against flash fire.
Test requirements
The aforementioned EN ISO performance standards have many similar requirements which does keep the amount of testing needed to a minimum. The majority of the test requirements are mandatory, however, ISO 11612 does provide optional tests which are chosen on the outcome of a risk assessment of the hazards found in practice.

Mandatory tests:

  • Heat resistance at 180°C (EN ISO 11612 only) – ISO 17493
  • Flame spread – ISO 15025
  • Dimensional change – ISO 5077
  • Tensile, tear & seam strength or burst strength – ISO 13934-1, ISO 13937-2 & ISO 13935-2 or ISO 13938-1
  • Innocuousness – pH or chromium content – ISO 3071 or ISO 17075
  • Impact of spatter (EN ISO 11611 only) – ISO 9150
  • Heat transfer (radiation) (EN ISO 11611 only) – ISO 6942
  • Electrical resistance (EN ISO 11611 only) – EN 1149-2 (performed at a modified temperature and relative humidity)
Optional tests (all relate to ISO 11612):
  • Heat resistance at 260°C – ISO 17493
  • Water penetration Code letter W) – EN 343
  • Convective heat (Code letter B) – ISO 9151
  • Radiant heat (Code letter C) – ISO 6942
  • Molten aluminium splash (Code letter D) – ISO 9185
  • Molten iron splash (Code letter E) – ISO 9185
  • Contact heat (Code letter F) – ISO 12127
NFPA 2112 is used in America to assess the performance of industrial workwear and although the tests are similar to those listed above, ASTM test methods are used. A significant difference is that NFPA 2112 makes manikin testing mandatory and imposes pass/fail criteria for such testing.
